About project

Following the devastation caused by Cyclone Sidr in 2007, a coalition of British-based businesses set up an innovative reconstruction initiative in Majher Chor, in the Pirojpur district of Bangladesh, to rebuildessential infrastructure and housing. MDM designed a core-shelter housing product usingsimple but high-quality construction methods.

The design combines a ferrocement roofing sheet with a sand-and-cement hollow block construction, providing improved thermal properties and increased stability in cyclone conditions. These materials are also more durable and low maintenance than CGI sheeting.Simple construction techniques and locally available materials kept costs low. Throughout the project, MDM refined the construction method to reduce risk and problem-solve constraints. The initiative also introduced new techniques and skills to the local construction industry.

The project was completed in 2009 and is attracting attention as a potential model for use in other locations. It was inaugurated by Duke of Glouchester.
