UCEP Cheyne Tower is a 6-story office building located in the heart of Dhaka’s busiest commercial area, Segunbagicha. The site is surrounded by narrow roads on two sides (south and west), and by high-rise buildings on the other two sides (north and east), which block out sunlight. This posed a challenge for the architects, who had to carefully divide the internal space to make the best use of the limited sunlight.
We decided to use glass facades on the south and west sides to bring in as much sunlight as possible. We also used concrete columns and flat slabs to avoid unwanted beams, which maximized the networking areas. The few internal walls that were used were kept to a minimum to ensure that the core, service, and working areas could function smoothly without being interrupted by each other.
The building was designed to meet strict building codes for commercial areas. MDM Architects were appointed as the project designers, also carried out the MEPF design and construction supervision. We conducted a feasibility study, prepared detailed designs, and tender documents, and selected the contractor. They also supervised the construction of the project to ensure that it was completed to international standards.
The interior design of the building uses environmentally friendly materials, such as bamboo flooring and recycled furniture. This makes the floor, walls, and ceilings user-friendly and sustainable. The building was completed in 2010 and is now a popular office space for businesses in Dhaka.
