Architectural Design & Extension
The American International School is located within the prestigious diplomatic enclave of Baridhara, Dhaka. MDM were engaged to design a two-storey vertical extension to the existing building, adding a third and fourth floor that introduce specialist academic and sporting facilities befitting a world-class international school.
The new floors accommodate state-of-the-art MS laboratories alongside indoor sports facilities including tennis and squash courts. To guarantee acoustic privacy, all external walls are cavity-wall construction and windows are double-glazed. Lightweight imported blockwork was used for internal walls to reduce the dead load imposed on the existing structure below.
The building envelope was designed with Bangladeshi climate conditions in mind: exposed brick and brick cladding provide thermal mass and durability, while plastered wall sections offer a crisp, contemporary contrast. The steel column-and-beam frame with RCC deck slab efficiently transfers loads from the new floors to the foundations. Sports courts are enclosed by purpose-designed perimeter fencing, also designed by MDM.
