About project

MDM Architects were commissioned to design the interior spaces of the British Council Head Office in Dhaka, transforming a simple single-storey residential building into a modern, vibrant working environment fit for the organisation’s public-facing and administrative functions.

To maintain coherence with the simplicity of the existing building, MDM adopted an approach based on geometric clarity and bold colour. Interior walls were finished in white, red, blue, yellow and orange — a palette chosen to energise the working environment throughout office hours. IES spotlights directed at the wall surfaces create shifting gradients of shade and colour, adding depth and variation to what would otherwise be a modest envelope.

The internal programme is divided into reception, waiting room, open office, classrooms, dining area, meeting room and conference room. Timber board partitions were used to define spaces, with glazed doors maintaining visual connectivity between staff and visitors. A carefully designed false ceiling conceals mechanical services and integrates contemporary lighting. Flooring materials — marble and tile — were selected according to the function of each space.
