About project

MDM was assigned a series of Multi-Purpose Cyclone Shelters (MPCSs) by the US Army Corps of Engineers, funded by the US Government and delivered to strict technical guidelines. The shelters serve a dual function: operating as fully equipped schools during normal periods and converting into community rehabilitation centres during cyclone emergencies.

Each MPCS is designed in either an ‘L’ or ‘I’ configuration to optimise circulation and evacuation efficiency. School facilities include classrooms and staff rooms, while emergency provisions include a first-aid room and a dedicated care room for pregnant women. Safety-focused design features include wide central staircases, three-metre-wide corridors for rapid evacuation, solar-powered backup generators and rainwater recycling systems. High-specification doors, windows and fittings are used throughout.

In 2013, MDM completed seven shelters across the Cox’s Bazaar, Shatkhira and Naogaon districts. In 2014, MDM was awarded a further five projects in the Barisal district, reinforcing its position as a trusted delivery partner for critical humanitarian infrastructure.
