About project

MDM was appointed as design-build contractor for a new blood bank facility at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu. The project was funded by the US Government and procured through the US Army Corps of Engineers, with sustainable design principles applied throughout.

Given Nepal’s seismic environment, structural resilience was paramount. The building is designed to withstand earthquake forces, and a rooftop solar installation provides sufficient energy to maintain all critical emergency systems during a power outage. The structural system comprises a reinforced concrete frame with external brick walls and internal stud partitions.

The external form of the building draws on traditional Nepalese domestic architecture, with clay roof tiles creating a familiar and welcoming aesthetic for patients and visitors. Natural light was a key design driver: upper-floor openings draw daylight deep into the building, and louvres are used to balance artificial and natural light levels throughout the facility.
